Fourteen mornings before the 14th

You know that slight panic in early February. The table's booked, or nearly, and you keep circling a gift that might feel like something other than what everyone gives that same night: roses grabbed on the way home, the heart-shaped box of chocolates, the card where all that's left to do is sign.

You're not short on ideas, and you're certainly not short on love. Valentine's Day just fits into one evening, and one evening is a short time to say everything you've thought about someone for a whole year.

The 14 days of Valentines stretch it out over two weeks. From February 1 to the 14th, one day opens every morning, and behind each one is something that could only come from you: a photo from your first winter together, a note left before coffee, your voice on a rainy morning. Fourteen times, they wake up knowing someone thought of them before the day began.

There's nothing to ship and nothing to install. You build it in your browser, they open it on their phone, one day at a time, until the 14th.

February 1 to 14, or any count you like

Fourteen days is the simplest shape: the first on February 1, the last on Valentine's Day itself, and every number lands on its date. Day 9 opens on the 9th, day 14 on the morning of the 14th.

None of that is fixed, though: you choose the first morning and the last when you create the calendar. Seven days if you only want Valentine's week, thirty-one if you'd rather start in mid-January, when nothing else is being celebrated. Whatever the count, each day stays sealed until its own morning, the last one included, and you can keep that one for the letter you've been putting off for months.

What waits behind each day

The classic 14 days of Valentines is a small gift every morning from February 1 to the 14th. You can keep the gifts, of course, and let each day tell them where that morning's gift is hiding. On the mornings you don't buy anything, the day can be enough on its own: a photo from your first date, one reason you love them, a voice note recorded on the bus. Fourteen is few enough that every one of them counts.

Photos and words are free; letters, your voice, stories and the rest come with the complete version.

You fill it, they open one each morning

You put it together from your side, on whichever January evenings suit you. They don't see a thing until you send the link, and you can send it whenever you like, even with only the first days ready: each of the others gets filled before its morning.

On their side, there's no account and nothing to install. On February 1, the first day opens, then one every morning, on its own, at midnight. Fourteen mornings, and you never have to remember to send a thing.

You fill it.

On January evenings, at your own pace.

Their name, February 1, February 14.

  2. Fill

A light for February

Before the photos and the words, there's the room the calendar lives in. Dawn, the morning light, is free; the complete version opens the other eight, and three of them feel made for February: Peony and its rose-tinted bedroom at six in the evening, Velours with its cinema red and wax seal, Seashell and its mother-of-pearl. You can switch even after you've sent it.

For him, for her, for anyone far away

Most people make it for the person they share a couch with. It means even more to someone you won't see on the 14th: across the distance, every morning gets through where flowers can't, and if you're looking for other ways to spend that night, there are fifteen Valentine's ideas for long-distance couples.

Questions about the 14 days

What are the 14 days of Valentines?

A countdown to Valentine's Day with one small surprise a day, usually from February 1 to February 14. Some call it a Valentine's countdown calendar, others a Valentine's advent calendar. On Unveil, each day hides a photo, a few words, a letter or your voice, and opens on its own on its morning.

When should I start?

For fourteen days, on February 1; for Valentine's week alone, on February 8. You pick the first morning and the last when you create your Unveil calendar, up to 31 days, and you can prepare it in January, one day per evening, so it only has to wait for its first morning.

Is it free?

Yes: a free Unveil calendar holds all fourteen days, and up to 31, with photos and written words, in the Dawn atmosphere. The complete version is about ten dollars, paid once, no subscription, and unlocks all thirteen formats, nine atmospheres and an optional password.

Do you need an app?

No. An Unveil calendar lives behind a private link and opens in the browser, on any phone. There's nothing to install on either side, and no account to create on theirs.

Can they open a day early?

No. Unveil keeps each day sealed until its own morning, however many times they tap on it. The fourteenth won't open before the 14th, not even at 11:55 the night before.

Can I still make one at the last minute?

Yes. Made on February 10, an Unveil calendar can still start the next morning and end on the 14th: four days instead of fourteen, with the same last one. You can send it with the first days ready, then fill each of the others before its morning comes.

What should I give on each of the 14 days?

Whatever proves you know them: a photo nobody else has, one reason you love them each morning, a clue to a small present hidden somewhere in the house. Photos and words are free on Unveil, and the complete version adds letters, your voice and short videos. For the reasons, there are seventy-three to choose from: keep the fourteen that sound most like the two of you.

The morning of the 14th

Then it's the last one. It's barely light out, the coffee's going, and there's a single day left. Since the first, they've known who every one of them came from. This morning, they open the last one slowly, to make it last a little longer.

One evening goes by fast; fourteen mornings stay. Fill in the first day tonight, a photo of the two of you and a line that sounds like you, and the rest will follow.

P.S.save the fourteenth for the thing you've never quite managed to say out loud.

What will be waiting on the 14th?

You still have time to decide. Start with the first day, a photo of the two of you and a few words that sound like you, and let the others come as they come.

With all the care in the world, the Unveil team.
