Twelve days, every one of them from you
You've seen the pictures. Twelve little parcels lined up on a shelf, a numbered tag on each, one to open every day until Christmas. You want that for him, or for her, so you start a list, and somewhere around number five it stops feeling like a gift and starts feeling like errands.
That doesn't mean anything's wrong with you, or with the love behind the list. The old carol never cared much about the gifts either (nobody really wants six geese). On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me… What the song counts is the true love, turning up again every morning, twelve days in a row.
A digital 12 days of Christmas keeps the ritual and lets you decide what waits behind each day: a photo from a December only the two of you remember, a letter for the night before Christmas, your voice on a cold morning. Twelve times, they wake up to something nobody else could have left there.
There's nothing to ship and nothing to install. You build it in your browser, they open it on their phone, one day at a time.
Before Christmas, or the twelve after
These days, most people count their twelve days down to Christmas. Start on December 13 and the last morning falls on Christmas Eve, or start on December 14 and it falls on Christmas Day itself, each morning a little closer to the big day.
The older twelve days begin just as Christmas is supposed to be over. In the carol and in the church calendar, they run from Christmas Day to January 5, Twelfth Night. A few days in, the presents are open, the leftovers are running low and the house has gone quiet, which is exactly when a surprise lands: nobody else is giving anything anymore.
You choose the first morning and the last when you create the calendar, and it counts the days in between: twelve before, twelve after, or all twenty-four from December 13 to January 5, with Christmas right in the middle. Whichever you pick, each day stays sealed until its own morning, the last one included.

Everyone else went back to work days ago, and the tree is shedding all over the rug. Leave it up one more night. I'd do all twelve again, starting tomorrow, if you'd let me.
your true love, apparently,
Ben
A gift, a letter, a voice
You can still give the parcels, of course. The calendar becomes the tag on each one: a photo of the coat pocket where today's present is hiding, a line about why you chose it. The present stays small, and the morning around it is what makes it yours.
And on the days you don't buy anything at all, the morning can be the gift on its own: a photo from the year you met, a voice note recorded before your first coffee, the letter that says what you never quite manage to say out loud. With only twelve, none of them has to be filler.

You fill it, they open one each morning
You build it from your side, on the evenings December leaves you. They don't see a thing until you send the link, whenever you decide it's ready.
On their side, the first day opens on the first morning and the second waits, sealed, until the next. Twelve mornings, and you never have to remember to send anything.
You fill it.
Between the wrapping and the office parties.

They open it.
One day every morning, until day twelve.

Three steps to the first morning
Start a few evenings before the first day: their name, the first morning and the last. Then fill it a day at a time, in whatever order the ideas come, until all twelve are waiting.

For him, for her, for anyone far away
The twelve days have been a love story since the first line of the carol, and most people still make them for the person they share a couch with: a boyfriend, a girlfriend, a husband, a wife. If you'd like ideas for him or her specifically, the advent calendar guides for your boyfriend and your girlfriend were written for twenty-four doors, and their ideas fit just as well in twelve.
The shape works for anyone you won't see enough of this Christmas, too: the partner spending it on another continent, the friend having a hard December, your parents in the house you grew up in.

Questions about the twelve days
What are the 12 days of Christmas?
Traditionally, the twelve days from Christmas Day to January 5, Twelfth Night, on the eve of Epiphany: the days of the old carol, where a true love sends a gift every day. Today the name also covers the twelve days before Christmas, one surprise a day from December 13 or 14. An Unveil calendar works for either, because you choose the first morning and the last.
When does a 12 days of Christmas countdown start?
To finish on Christmas Eve, start on December 13; to finish on Christmas Day, start on December 14. The traditional twelve days start on December 25 and end on January 5. On Unveil, you pick both dates when you create the calendar.
Is it free?
Yes: a free Unveil calendar holds all twelve days, and up to 31, with photos and written words, in the Dawn atmosphere. The complete version is about ten dollars, paid once, no subscription, and unlocks all thirteen formats, nine atmospheres and an optional password.
Do you need an app?
No. An Unveil calendar lives behind a private link and opens in the browser, on any phone. There's nothing to install on either side, and no account to create on theirs.
Can they open a day early?
No. Unveil keeps each day sealed until its own morning, however many times they tap on it. By the third day, they'll stop trying.
Can I still make one at the last minute?
Yes. Made on December 15, an Unveil calendar can still start the next morning and run to Christmas Eve, with fewer days but the same last one. You can send it with the first days ready and fill each of the others before its morning comes. And if December has already gotten away from you, the twelve days after Christmas don't begin until December 25.
What should I give on each of the 12 days?
Whatever proves you know them: a photo nobody else has, a line you've been meaning to say for months, a clue to a small present hidden somewhere in the house. Photos and words are free on Unveil, and the complete version adds letters, your voice and short videos. If you want more, there are twenty-four ideas for him and her, written for an advent calendar: pick your twelve.
The twelfth morning
Then it's the last one. Christmas Eve, with the final presents still being wrapped in the next room, or January 5, when everything else about Christmas has been put away. One day left to open, and they've known who it's from since the first morning.
Twelve days is enough to say what a whole year never left room for. Start with the first one, and let the other eleven come as they come.
P.S.hide the twelfth present somewhere only the two of you would know to look.
Before Christmas, or after?
Either way, it starts the same: one quiet evening, a photo you both love, a few words that sound exactly like you.
With all the care in the world, the Unveil team.
